Nursing homes can be a touchy subject for many elderly people, but when the time comes that they need help with their daily activities, it may be the best place for them. It benefits everyone to have the conversation early so that it's easier to deal with when the time comes, and to make sure the family is on the same page. Living in San Diego does have advantages, though. There are several nursing homes throughout the city, so finding one that meets your loved one's criteria is easier than in other states. Plus, San Diego boasts some of the best weather year round, which makes living there ideal.
Originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, San Diego was the first site visited by the Europeans when they visited the west coast. It was originally claimed by Spain, then went to Mexico after the War of Independence, and finally, Mexico ceded it to the United States after the Mexican-American War. The Mexican negotiators of the Treaty of Cahuenga tried to keep San Diego, but the American negotiators claimed it was just as important as San Francisco and Los Angeles. Mexico ceded the entire area to the United States, and the Mexican border was established one league south of the southernmost point of San Diego Bay, including the entire bay in the United States. The main economic engines that drive the city are mostly military and defense activities, tourism, and international trade. Because of the fine weather, tourist attractions, and healthy lifestyle sweeping through California, it's a great place for seniors to go into a nursing home.
Doing What's Best for Your Loved One
Despite your desire to care for a loved one, you have a life and responsibilities, as well. As they age, it will become harder for you to manage and cope with it all, especially if they are sick. As their guardian, you have to think of what's best for them, and if you can't commit to the level of care they need, then you must consider a nursing home. Nursing homes provide aging seniors a social, supportive environment with individuals in the same situation as themselves. It gives them a chance to live a higher quality of life than if they were simply stuck at home. Nursing homes provide activities, social outings, and events for seniors to keep them active and happy. Your loved one can have a comfortable life while staying at a nursing home, you just have to choose the one that fits them best.
Choosing the Right Facility
Your focus should be on finding the right facility for your loved one, and making sure you're both comfortable with the facility. First, make a list of your non-negotiables. This may include things such as a secured facility, a varied menu that offers high quality food, options for day trips to theaters and museums, medical care, and so on. Next, narrow down your possibilities based on your non-negotiable items. Once you have a few places picked out, contact them for visits. Ask questions about the facility and the staff, and pay attention to the residents. Also, don't be afraid to ask the hard questions. It's important to know what the nursing home's policies are, and whether you agree with them. Be sure to find out if the nursing home encourages and allows its residents the freedom to make certain decisions for themselves. One of the hardest parts of nursing home care for seniors is the feeling that they lose their independence. It's hard to accept, so to help seniors feel more comfortable, more nursing homes are allowing seniors to make more decisions. It gives them an opportunity to feel they are still in control of their lives, which can go a long way to smooth out the transition.
It's important to pick a place close to family, and to visit as much as possible to help them transition to their new lifestyle. It won't take long, provided you've picked the right facility, because they will have a more active social life, and probably spend time enjoying things they'd never done before. Seniors in San Diego have several activities available to them, and they can see and experience the city in a completely different way than tourists, just by living there.
